Thursday 17th October saw the new recruits head to Abbeycroft Leisure Centre for their swimming assessment. This session is a vital part of the cadets’ physical development, ensuring that every individual meets the safety standards required for water-based activities within the Air Training Corps.

The assessment itself was straightforward but challenging. Recruits were required to swim 50 meters unaided, demonstrating their ability to move confidently through the water. Following this, they had to tread water for two minutes, a test of stamina and endurance. The final part of the assessment required them to exit the pool safely from the deep end, proving that they could handle themselves in more demanding aquatic environments.

These skills are not just box-ticking exercises; they are critical for any cadet aiming to participate in advanced activities like kayaking, canoeing, or expeditions that involve water crossings. The ability to swim and manage oneself in water is essential for safety and competence, both in cadet life and beyond.

The session also tested recruits’ confidence in the water, something that is crucial for team-building activities where trust and cooperation are key. The majority of recruits passed with flying colours, showing determination and focus. Those needing more practice will receive additional guidance to help them meet the required standard, ensuring that no one is left behind.

This swimming assessment marks another important step in their cadet journey, reinforcing not just physical fitness but also resilience and teamwork—qualities that are central to their development at 863 (Thurston) Squadron.

Congratulations to all who attended, achieving a 100% pass rate and showcasing a fine example of cadets with the right attitude and spirit in public! Well done!
